Dog Grooming

Scruffy To Fluffy Grooming Services:

All dogs benefit from regular grooming, it is a myth that dogs should not be washed too often. "Doggie smell" is rancidification of fatty acids that build up on the skin and in the coat. Washing will remove this build up.

Most dogs enjoy being shampooed, especially if they start at an early age and if you shampoo your dog yourself it can improve your bond with your pet.

How often your dogs should be groomed depends on the breed and coat type and how much brushing and grooming you carry out yourself. Non shedding dogs, for example: a Bichon Frisé, Maltese, Lowchen, Poodle, Shih Tzu and Lhasa should be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks, Westie coats vary enormously and can be between 6 and 10 weeks, a Cocker Spaniel around 6 to 8 weeks, Working Cockers can sometimes go a lot longer as they tend not to have the coat mass of a non working 'show type' coats can be incredible dense and quick growing. Springer Spaniels can be groomed anything between 8 to 12 weeks and Goldie's benefit from a groom every twelve weeks but again this can vary depending on coat and what is going on underneath, behind in their trousers and feathers! Goldie owner will appreciate what I mean! Keeping your dog washed and properly groomed helps keep them healthy. Dogs can carry an enormous amount of dirt, dust, dander, dead skin etc within their coats. Correct washing and grooming by professional groomers removes dirt, rancid fats and allergens leaving your dogs coat very clean, light and airy which feels clean and pleasant to touch. Dogs with really persistent skin problems should be washed weekly Malaseb or Epi- Soothe shampoo will sooth inflamed skin.

Bathing:

Getting the bathing right is the foundation of a good groom and at Scruffy To Fluffy our aim is to get your dog really clean. Central to the Scruffy To Fluffy Grooming Services is the bathing set-up and bathing techniques used which is fundamental to all grooms making sure that the correct mix of shampoo and water penetrate through your dogs coat.

The grooming service is a highly efficient and extremely effective, the specialised technique enables us to shampoo your dog through a pressurized shower hose gently getting deep into the coat and down to the skin removing all dirt, grim and rancid fats. This is no ordinary bathing system, every effort is put into ensuring your dog has a thorough wash and comes back to you clean and fresh.

Shampoo and Skin Care:

The pH of your dog's skin is 7.5, where as human skin is 5.5 using the correctly formulated dog shampoo is very important and will improve the health of the skin and increase natural oils. We use an extensive range of high grade dog shampoos and coat conditioners depending on coat type, condition of their skin and many other factors are taking into consideration.

If your dog is hyper-sensitive then a special veterinary grade shampoos which contains Evening Primrose Oil, a well-known traditional essential oil renown for improving the coat will be used. In the case of Westie's, Sharpei's or and dogs with chronic skin conditions or irritated itchy skin then we advise using Malaseb, Epi-Soothe, Allermyl, or Sporal- D. These shampoo will also benefit if your dog has dry flaky skin.

If your dog suffers with recurring skin problems such as malessizia which is a yeast infection causing terrible itching - then ideally they should be washed weekly in an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial shampoo such as Maleseb or Sporal-D (we stock Sporal-D). We offer a wash only service for breeds such as Westies and Jack Russels who most commonly suffer from this type of skin problem. This service is only available for regularly groomed dogs who because of their skin problems require additional in-between groom washes in the specialist anti-fungal shampoo. Please call for a quotation, as a rough guide a westie would be approximately £10 to £15 a Jack Russel approximately £5.
