Shar Pei,

These days the Shar Pei is a companion dog, they are calm, loyal and very affectionate. Their coat can be a variety of solid colours, is short, bristly & harsh to touch.

The wrinkled frowning expression and loose skin are its main characteristic but excessive wrinkles can cause serious skin problems in many Shar Pei's and as a groomer I see this problem with this breed often. You must never use human shampoos on dogs (especially Shar Pei's) as the PH levels are wrong and could make the skin problems worse. Instead regular use of specially formulated doggie shampoos will help to cleans their coat, removing dead skin cells, dirt, rancid yeasty smelling fats, cleaning the pores to allow correct flow of oils.

The Shar Pei was created in China, it is believed this breed can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) Most likely bred from the Tibetan Mastiff and the Chow Chow and possibly even Pyrenean Mountain Dog and Molosser breeds. Sadly used as a fighting dog but also a useful as a hunting and game guarding dog.
